After a mixtape, two albums, a baby, and a pandemic (that is still going on), Kehlani is finally back headlining tours five years after her Sweet Sexy Savage tour for her first album. Previously, she played the Fillmore Detroit next door. This time around in Detroit, Kehlani played a bigger venue: the historic Fox Theatre with her presence, a venue that she and her opening act, Rico Nasty, said was their favorite.
Desten Conrad was the first opener. Although he’s a new artist, he’s written several songs with Kehlani on her last two albums, including “Water” and “Up All Night.”
Rico Nasty followed next. With her rowdy energy, she was the perfect act to help the crowd shake off that after-work feeling on a Monday night. one of the highlights was her performing “Smack A Bitch.”
Kehlani opened her show with a video of her and her 3-year-old daughter Adeya, on a tour bus. It was nice to see her maternal side while coloring with the toddler. The show started off slow and soft with songs like “Little Story” and “shooter interlude” before picking up like a tidal wave with songs like “more than I should.” The show was a journey through all of her projects, including her first mixtape Cloud 19. Some of my favorite songs she performed were “Water,” “More Than I Should” and “Piece of Mind.”
The set structure has a similar vibe to the Blue Water Road album, with its blue hues and soft draping.
Throughout her performance, there Kehlani seemed serene, confident, and grateful. She even took out the time to thank the audience for giving her a life that she could have never imagined. After shooting her first tour in 2017 and being a fan since 2015, it’s amazing and inspiring to see her growth and evolution.
Tip about merchandise: The line is long and items and sizes do sell out. If you want popular items, like the crewneck I would suggest getting in line early or purchasing it online. For other items, you can step out during the show when there is no lie.
