After becoming Freeform’s biggest hit in its first season, Cruel Summer is back for Season 2. A new mystery in a new town, this season is set in a different time period, with the story unfolding in Summer 1999, Winter 1999, and Summer 2000. I talked to series star Griffin Gluck, who plays Luke, about the love triangle, the show’s amazing soundtrack, and his favorite 90s trend.

Luke is kind of in a bit of a love triangle with Isabella and Megan. Why do you think they’re attracted to him and why is he attracted to both of them because they’re total opposites?

That’s such a good question. I have no clue. I mean I think a big part of it with Megan is just the fact that they’ve known each other for so long so it’s that sense of familiarity. You know, they do love each other and like just by being best friends for their entire lives, and now it’s kind of just evolved and they’re older and you know their relationship takes a turn. Isabella, I couldn’t tell you I don’t know, she’s new to town and you know I think Luke seems like a pretty cool guy. He’s got a cool fam, apparently to the outside world, a cool house, nice swimming pool, and she’s there for fun so I think other than that I mean hopefully he’s got a good personality too. But I’d be the last person to be able to judge that.

That’s true. This show has such a great soundtrack. What is probably one of your favorite songs from that time period of like ’99, 2000?

I’m a big fan of 90s rap actually. I prefer it to like modern rap, I guess aside from like a couple characters here and there, but I don’t know. I’ve been listening to a lot of Black Star recently. Those guys are sweet.

Do you have any favorite 90s trends?

My least favorite is the cargo shorts.  My favorite, oh man, I think the VHS and the camcorder, just footage like that.

Yeah, I saw you brought the camcorder to the premiere.

Cruel Summer is on Mondays on Freeform.
