Shortcomings, based on the graphic novel of the same name, is about Ben, a Berkeley movie theatre manager, who thinks he is better than everyone else. While he has his best friend, Alice, and a long-term girlfriend, Miko, every one’s around him patience for his arrogance is growing thin. The comedy-drama marks the directorial debut for Randall Park and made its rounds at film festivals like Sundance and Tribeca stars Justine H. Min (The Umbrella Academy), Ally Miko (The Big Door Prize), Tavi Gevinson (Gossip Girl), Sherry Cola (Joy Ride), and Debby Ryan (Insatiable).
I talked to Randall Park, about why he decided why he wanted this offbeat, indie film to be his directorial debut, what scene he was most excited to see come to life from the graphic novel, and why Sasha had to be the one to be boldly honest with Ben.
I talked to Justin H Min (Ben), Ally Maki (Miko), Tavi Gevinson (Autumn) about this film being the next phase of representation by not being glossy and showing flaws (“shitty people need representation too”) and showcasing the multifaceted personality of these characters.
