[Review] Theatre Camp Is a Love Letter to Every Dramatic Misfit

Theatre Camp, the festival darling that first premiered at Sundance Film Festival and then had a showing at SXSW, is now in theatres. Written by lifelong friends, Molly Gordan and Ben Platt with their partners Nick Lieberman and Noah Galvin, we see the summer at Adirondacts, a theatre camp where the weirder you are, the better. Their idea of contraband isn’t weed, but Throat Coat tea. Dealing with their fearless leader being in a coma and financial issues, this has to be the best musical they’ve ever done in order to save the camp.

The movie gives vibes similar to films like Drop Dead Gorgeous, Heavy Weights, and, funny enough, Camp Rock 2, with a group of misfits showing they have what it takes to stand out, even in the face of glossy competition. While the film has a few missteps, there are some standout performances withJimmy Tatro and Ayo Edebiri. Its refreshing that it has original music and isn’t resting on mainstream hits. The film is a promising start for Gordan, Platt, Lieberman and Galvin and seem to be a love letter to all theatre kids and summer pasts.
