Cold Copy, the thriller that premiered at Tribeca 2023, is about Mia, played by Bel Powley (The Morning Show, The King of Staten Island), a journalism student who idolizes her professor Diane, played by Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish, American Fiction). When working on a story, Mia meets Igor, played by Jacob Tremblay (The Little Mermaid, Room), a teenager who is dealing with the death of his mother, a famous author. Diane pushes Mia to her moral limits to get a scandalous story, and Mia will do anything to please Diane, even betray the ones who truly care about her.
I talked to Cold Copy’s writer and director Roxine Helberg about why Mia is Diane’s Frankenstein, why Tracee and Bel were perfect to play Diane and Mia, and showing a different side to Tracee.
