The Her Universe Fashion Show, a stand out event at San Dieog Comic Con, celebrated its tenth anniversary at Comic-Con. This year’s show was sponsored by Mattel, which was perfect, because the brand was celebrating Barbie’s 65th anniversary and Polly Pocket’s 35th anniversary. Her Universe was the perfect brand to pair up to celebrate these two iconic women. Before entering the fashion show, Polly was larger than pocket size with a huge picture perfect installation.

Ashley paid homage to Barbie by sharing her own “Barbie” story about not allowing herself to be put into a box and opening the show by having several iconic Barbie looks projected on her.

Barbie and Polly Pocket and other iconic Mattel brands like Uno and Hot Wheels were represented in Ashley and her co-host and friend since childhood, Broadway star Michael James Scott, outfits during the show as well.

Twenty-five designers showed off their “geek-couture” inspired fashion. The source material ran the gambit, from toys, to super heroes, to movie to TV shows, and even “Bluey.” My favorites were the Monster High, Magic 8 Ball, and “Jaws” looks. But what got my vote was the last look, Wes Jenkins “Made For This” Barbie look where he made a textile out of second-hand Barbie clothes.

Wes was the judges winner and Candice Miller won the audience award with her “Dune 2” inspired look, both taking home $10,000 and an opportunity to design a collection for Her Universe.
