[Review] Troye Sivan and Charli XCX’s Sweat Tour Opening Night in Detroit Shows That Superstars Can Share the Stage and Two Headliners Are Better Than One

I’ve never been one for clubs, and the only time I “dance like no one is watching” is literally when no one is watching. However, at the opening night of the Troye Sivan and Charli XCX Sweat Tour in Detroit, I was literally dancing in a denim bra and mini skirt as if I was a veteran club kid. It would be impossible to stand still, even if I wanted to. Which I surely did not want to. The night was epic. Detroit was the perfect place to open the tour since it is the birthplace of techno music, a genre that both Troye and Charli are influenced by.

The first time I saw Troye Sivan was back in 2016 for the Blue Neighbourhood Tour. I had just started covering concerts and someone from his label had invited me to come. I had never heard of him before, but I was immediately captivated. I’m the type of person that first impressions matter when it comes to entertainers, so if it’s a good one, I tend to be down for you forever. I loved his performance in “Three Months” and thought that “Something To Give Each Other” was an innovative album. The music videos and choreography were stunning.

“Boom Clap” and “Fancy” were my first taste of Charli XCX. I saw her open for Taylor Swift’s reputation tour and became further intrigued with her “Crash” album. “Brat” obviously consumed my summer and “365” was a part of my soundtrack.

The Sweat tour seems like an impossible idea. Co-headliners? Especially two artists who complement each other so well? We don’t see that too often. I was excited to see how that was executed.

Instead of the show being split in half, Troye and Charli took turns performing, going back and forth. Troye integrated the choreography that he’s known for from his “Something To Give Each Other” videos with dancers, even showing new moves for other songs. Charli was solo dancing, vibing, and strutting on her own to her tracks. While this was a big venue, the show simultaneously felt like a huge rave and an intimate show with its unique stage design. It was spread so wide that it felt like Troye and Charli were coming out to the crowd.

Concerts always make me fall in love with the albums that are being performed even more, but I also walk away loving a specific song. You just have a special moment in the concert where you specifically connect with the song, artist, and performance that you can never have at home. For this show, Troye’s “What’s The Time Where You Are” and Charli’s “Everything is Romantic” are the songs I most connected with and have been on replay.
