Hadestown is the Tony award-winning musical based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. Eurydice, a young woman who is cold and hungry, travels to Hadestown for food and warmth. Her lover, Orpheus, travels to rescue her. The musical tells their love story while also telling the love story of Hades and Persephone, two polar opposites. Hermes narrates the musical but is also Orpheus’s confidant.

I talked to Jaylon C. Crump, who plays Hermes, who identifies as masculine presenting non-binary and goes by he/they pronouns about the lyric changes that were made to better fit their identity, why he thinks Orpheus turns around, their bond with Bryan Munar, who plays Orpheus, and how their daily routine to protect their voice.

Hadestown is now playing at the Fisher Theatre now through February 2nd. You can get tickets here.
