Lauren Spencer Smith brought her messy feelings to Detroit for her sold-out stop on the Art of Being a Mess Tour at the Fillmore Detroit, and there was nothing messy about the show. From the set design to the vocals to the energy, even though Lauren was sick, the performance was flawless.

The stage, designed like a bus stop for the LSS Express, featured a payphone that would ring throughout the show. Lauren would pick up and listen to a recording of herself on the other end of the line. These phone calls tied into the next song she performed. For instance, before “small,” there was a message from Lauren about how her body isn’t a project.

Lauren also added a fun spin-the-wheel segment to choose a cover song. The fan she picked—who had attended one of her concerts overseas—said she wanted to hear Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever.” While the wheel didn’t land on that song, Lauren moved it to the selection anyway, to the delight of the fan and the crowd.

Lauren also read fan-submitted secrets from a box, including some racy and silly ones. Overall, it was a fun night and a show that proved there is beauty in being a mess.
