On the Come Up, based on the New York Times best-selling book by Angie Thomas (The Hate U Give) is about Bri, a female battle rapper who is dealing with financial struggles while trying to gain respect in the music industry.

I talked to Jamila Gray about how she relates to her character Bri, being able to work with Black women behind the scenes and in front of the camera, acting alongside her director Sanaa Lathan, and the hip hop songs that motivate her.
