Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told is the new Hulu documentary about Freaknik (sometimes referred to as Freaknic). First started as a spring break picnic for students at the Atlanta University Center Consortium (Clark Atlanta, Spellman, Morehouse, Morris Brown) in the 80s, soon it became an event where people all over the country descended to Atlanta to party. It had its world premiere at SXSW.
The film includes interviews with 21 Savage, Too $hort, Jermaine Dupri, Killer Mike, Luther “Uncle Luke” Campbell, Ceelo Green, Jalen Rose, Kenny Burns, Lil Jon, Legendary Jerry, Stacy Lloyd, Sharon Toomer, Emma Horton, Monique Tolliver, Tony Towns, and Amadi Boone.
I talked to showrunner Geraldine L. Porras and director P. Frank Williams about why people look at Freaknik so fondly, what was the demise of the event, and if Freaknik could exist today.
Freaknik: The Wildest Party New Told premieres on Hulu on Thursday, March 21.
