Summer Benton came up with the idea of her latest book, The Fanciest Flower, the follow up to her first book Ziblo’s Forest: What’s Up with That? after a long day of working with kids. While brushing her teeth, she noticed her toothbrush resembled a flower. After some drawings, the toothbrush eventually morphed into a fork and soon “The Fanciest Flower” bloomed.

I talked to Summer Benton about the evolution of the characters in each of her books, The Fanciest Flower and Ziblo’s Forest: What’s Up with That?, how working with kids led her into writing and illustrating children books, adding humor to her books, and teaching about feelings through storytelling.
