“The French Italian” is about Doug and Valerie, a couple living in New York who love snooping on the couple in the building. After they move because they can’t deal with their neighbors arguing and karaoke singing, they decide to get their revenge by casting the neighbor in a play they wrote about them. Soon we realize that Dough and Valerie aren’t the most reliable narrators and maybe they blew the entire situation out of proportion, losing their sense of reality, and rent-controlled apartment, in the process. The movie premiered at Tribeca.

The movie stars Catherine Cohen, Aristotle Athari, Chloe Cherry, Ruby McCollister, Jon Rudnitsky, and Ikechukwu Ufomadu.

I talked to writer and director Rachel Wolther about creating the play within the movie, , how watching “Euphoria” made her realize that Chloe Cherry was perfect to play Mary, and the crazy backstories she has created about her neighbors.
