Tori Kelly brought “a perfect night” to Michigan when she her purple skies tour made a stop at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.

First up was her opening act, Maisy Kay, an independent artist from England. This month, she released a new EP, Wonderlust: The Dusk, which serves as a sister EP to her previously released EP, Wonderlust: The Dawn. Although Maisy’s fashion style is ethereal, she’s powerhouse vocally and has such a commanding presence on stage. I loved her ode to butterflies, including her mic, and bejeweled butterfly watercup. Her glowing pink mic stand was the perfect touch.

Tori Kelly was next, and to say I was excited was an understatement. I’ve been a fan since the Unbreakable Smile. I love the song “Funny.” I also love the Sing movies and just watched the new Sing: Thriller special. And her new song with JoJo “Bottomline” has been on repeat. But I was beyond impressed. Her vocals? Insane! No backing tracks here. Her catalog? Impeccable. And her setlist reflected that. While it included a lot of her songs from her latest album TORI. it did even include songs from her self-published first EP Handmade Songs.

Tori was also very interactive with her fans. During one section of her show, she took song requests from the audience. She also sang back and forth with individual fans during her song “Hollow.” During her song “distance” a new song from the deluxe version of her album TORI., she asked fans to FaceTime a person they wish were here with them and will singing the song, she took a few phones from fans and sang to the person on the phone.

What I loved most about Tori was that, just like her song sums up, she really is the “same girl.” Even though she’s been in the industry for over a decade, she seemed as excited to put on this show for us as the fans were to be there. It felt like there was no pretense about her, and she was the same curly girl who loved making music in her bedroom and who just happened to be playing them now on a world tour.
