After a two-year delay, The Weeknd finally played Detroit on Wednesday night, but with a few changes. Since the original show that was supposed to happen in 2020 (yes, COVID did, and still, sucks) The Weeknd released another album, Dawn FM, so he had even more new material to play. Also, instead of playing arenas, our boy is now playing stadiums, so we were treated to a grande spectacle at Ford Field.

The After Hours Til Dawn tour was everything you expected, and more, from one of the biggest acts in music. The set design was his version of the skyline of his hometown of Toronto, even featuring the CN Tower. He opened the show wearing a mask ala Phantom of the Oprah and similar to the one the animated version of him wears in the “How Do I Make You Love Me?” video. While Abel can bust a few moves, he has backup dancers veiled in red to add more to the production. He then went into a career-spanning performance, singing songs from all of his projects and even some of his guest features, including my favorite song from both of their discography “Crew Love” from Drake’s Take Care album. What added to the grandness of it all was the light bracelets that everyone wore that lit up and coordinated to some songs including “Blinding Lights” and “Less Than Zero.”

What really added to the show was the happiness that was in the air. Abel was elated to be playing Ford Field and expressed his gratitude frequently throughout the show, even proclaiming next time he wanted to do two shows there back-to-back. The Weeknd’s fans showed their excitement by buying a ton of merch and wearing shirts from his previous tours. I also saw several people in the red suit from the After Hours era.
